Does positive thinking come naturally?

As a professional coach we help others listen to their emotions so they can make sense of how they feel and where possible, support them to focus on positive thinking. However, the last 18 months has been a difficult time for everybody and some people have struggled more than others to stay positive. Especially when our normal coping mechanisms have been tested to the limit, so we wanted to share some techniques you can use in your coaching sessions to help clients focus on positive thinking and taking life one day at a time.

Positive Thinking

The way we think can dramatically affect the way we live our lives. And research into different mindsets has shown the way we think about ourselves and the world around us can have an impact on the success we have through life. This can start with how we learn, but has also been shown to impact on our resilience, how we manage stress and even the way our immune system functions.

We already know that positive thinking and building a mindset of abundance can be a beneficial approach for most people, but how do we know if positive thinking comes naturally to our clients or not. To help you identify if your clients have an abundance mindset (or scarcity mindset), ask them this simple question and explore their response in a coaching session:

Question:

If you see somebody being successful or winning, does that automatically mean that you lose, or would you ever consider that everybody (in some way) could be a winner?

To follow up on this question, we have set out some examples to help identify the natural mindset of your clients. This will help you discuss how they can build awareness on where they might think they are on the spectrum between the two different points of having either an abundance or scarcity mindset.

If you would like to help your clients change their natural mindset and learn how to focus on positive thinking, talk through the examples within the abundance mindset list above.

Ask them to consider any feelings they may have of envy over things other people have, or any thoughts they may have about the things they feel are missing within their lives. Ask them to always look for at least one positive in every situation, celebrate their achievements, and feel happy with who they are, what they have and the joy or love they receive from the people around them.
