Coaching Young People

This can be a confusing time for the parents, because the young person can on one hand want to keep the feeling of comfort, security and confidence they get from being at home, however they can also dream of the freedom they perceive adults enjoy. They can be torn between the tranquility of childhood and their adventurous need to be fulfilled, so they often test, grunt, experiment, nod off, enthuse and get anxious etc.

Confronted with their changing child, many parents can feel lost or disoriented. They may still see the body of a child and remember their first steps or scraped knees, the cuddles and the bedtime stories. The parent can see the relationship of dependence coming to an end, so they need to come to terms with this change in dynamics and make space for their child to explore and experiment.

Many parents do recognize this can be a difficult time, so they want to fully support their child through this process and may fear they will overlook an underlying problem. They will therefore seek the guidance of a specialist coach or therapist. The need for support does not necessarily mean the parent feels the child is not doing well, but they may themselves want support to navigate the changes taking place.

Some questions parents often ask:
My child is changing, so how can I avoid a crisis?
How can I stay connected with my child and support them?
How can I make the changes fulfilling for my child and our relationship?
When will my child know themselves and what they are interested in?
How can I help them find their own way?
Will my child become a balanced adult?
How can we tell if my child is really doing well or having difficulty?
When should I be worried?
