What does it actually mean to be introverted?

An introverted leader possesses a unique set of qualities that can be incredibly beneficial in different leadership scenarios.

Providing support, encouragement and guidance as a coach is crucial to help an introverted leader leverage their strengths and reach their full potential. It’s all about nurturing their unique qualities and empowering them to lead in their own authentic way.

There is no one kind of introvert and that includes introverted leaders. Some are highly organised and conservatism-driven, while others are creative and like to try new things. The only similarity is that they all have no such need to be in the foreground and would rather work with their team than rise above it.

Research shows that introverted leaders are good at:

– They like deeper conversations where they really get to know a team member.
– They take the time to build a relationship by really going into depth.
– Usually more cooperative foreman than helmsman.

An extrovert leader on the other hand is more directive, while the introvert is more participative. Collaboration is very important to him or her. Leaders’ styles may differ, but in general, the introverted style is mainly people-oriented. 

The power of the introverted leader: their challenges and strategies

However, introverted leaders can also encounter challenges, such as the need for time alone to recharge, which can clash with the demands of ongoing social leadership. You as a coach can help them with this by:

– Balance social interaction with alone time by regularly scheduling time to be alone and recharge after social interactions.

Getting them to use written communication by communicating via e-mail to save energy and communicate clearly and effectively.

– Encourage team delegation by allowing them to delegate tasks and trust team members to take on certain responsibilities so they can focus on strategic thinking and planning.

Learning to take care of themselves by scheduling sufficient rest, exercise and relaxation to stay energised and focused. 

In short: Introverted leaders have unique and valuable traits that can help them succeed in leadership roles. Their strong listening skills, empathy and reflective nature enable them to be effective and inspiring leaders.
